CHAPTER SIX

When Iris awoke, her head was pounding and the light streaming through the curtains was too much to look at. She groaned and threw an arm over her face before realization dawned.

Shit, did that really happen last night? She blindly reaching for her phone. She tapped the screen, but the battery was dead.

“Damn it,” she cursed before rolling onto her front. She reached between the nightstand and her bed, rummaging for the charger before finally getting hold of it. Once the phone was plugged in, the screen lit up and she held her breath.

There was a very real possibility that Layla had texted her and if she had, Iris was expecting it to be an angry one. She bit down on her bottom as the screen began to load, but there wasn’t enough charge to turn it on fully.

Iris had never been known for her patience. She couldn't take it anymore and flung the phone back down the bed with a huff. Instead of dwelling on the unfortunate events of the previous day, she headed to the bathroom to get dressed. It didn’t take long for her to shower and pull on some comfortable clothes. After all, she wasn’t feeling 100% and she had a lot to do today.

She checked the time on the wall clock. It had just passed eight o’clock and was too early for visiting hours, so Iris grabbed her laptop and flipped open the top. She was so engrossed in her work that she didn’t realize how time had flown by. She wanted to visit her grandma as soon as the hospital would allow her, so Iris unplugged her phone and packed her bag.

Once she’d taken a cab to pick up her car from the previous night, she finally turned her phone on and checked her messages. She sat in the driver’s seat of her rental car, tapping the steering wheel impatiently as her phone loaded. When it finally did, her jaw dropped.

Oh, damn.

There were two messages from Layla.

‘Get home safe. Talk to you tomorrow,’ read the message from the night before.

‘I’m going to see your grandma this morning. Want to meet me there? I’ll be there around 10.30. I think we need to talk,’ said a message from less than an hour ago.

A loud sigh escaped her lips, and she dropped her head to the smooth leather of the steering wheel. She was already planning to go to the hospital, and it was likely they’d bump into each other since Iris was planning to head straight there and it was already 10 a.m. What else could she do? Visit her grandmother later in the day and avoid Layla? That was something a teenager would do and Iris desperately wanted Layla to see her as an adult. Even if they couldn’t be together the way she wanted.

“Damn it,” she said with a huff before sending a quick reply to Layla, confirming she would meet her. As soon as she was finished, Iris cast the phone aside and switched on the engine of the car.
